Two researchers from the FinkA-Involve team of the University of Jena do field research in Bangalore. From March 25th to April 11th 2017 they conduct approximately 10-15 semi-structured interviews with volunteers and experts from the field of disaster management. This research is done in close cooperation with Indian researchers from the Institute for Advanced Studies (NIAS), the Karnataka State fire and emergency service (KSFES) and the Indian institute of science (IISC) who thankfully provided valuable support and personal contacts.
The aim is to gain insights into the motivational sources of voluntary engagement, and to generate an overview of challenges and opportunities regarding the integration of volunteers in the field of professional disaster management in India. The main focus lies on the Civil Defence Units in Bangalore, a primarily volunteer-based organization that engages in various initiatives of disaster-relief work.
